Complex systems increasingly include embedded digital technologies that interact with and are constrained by physical components systems. Although these play a central role in our society, they have only been scarcely addressed contemporary research on transformation the organization of innovation. This article explores complex products its consequences for organizational design. A longitudinal study avionics development since 1950s uncovers application technologies, first as sequence initial experiments, followed use add-on functionality, then an integral part achieving critical functionality systems, currently combining functionalities enabling generativity. The findings emphasize evolution intricate relationships between architecture approaches when technology enables enforces increased complexity, expanded integration, continuous development. These nested dependencies accentuated complexity has emerged beyond human cognition, where sophisticated boundary objects based modeling, simulation, data important organization's ability.
